Croatian architectural firm PROARCH, intent on preserving the essence of the nearby architectural vernacular, replaced the original straw roof with one that extends out over the main volume, accommodating an enclosed glass area below. The glass cube, in turn, sits on a simple expanse of wood decking that wraps about the cottage and cantilevers over a gently sloping hillside. Most striking is the perpendicular sliding glass door that completes the glass cube when closed, but, when open, extends off the wood platform totally, into the surrounding landscape.
At after echoing the simplicity of the cottage’s original type but supplying a sleek textural counterpoint, the glass extension gracefully modernizes the structure without intruding upon it—as all nicely-developed extensions should.
