An abandoned house in the British seaside town of Margate has been given a reprieve of sorts by an elaborate, ingenious art installation conceived by the British designer and artist Alex Chinneck. As portion of an effort to draw focus to the financial woes of the town, Chinneck has developed a optical illusion, entitled From the Knees of My Nose to the Belly of My Toes, which shows the brick facade of the extended derelict home appearing to slide down the residence’s front and onto the ground. Built with the volunteer aid of regional building workers and engineers, the installation has drawn widespread interest to a depressed part of a once prosperous region. Says Chinneck, “I was drawn to Cliftonville since it’s an area exactly where the culture hasn’t reached and I feel public art too usually forgets its duty to the public.”
