Comedy was very good to Bob Hope. Great enough to enable him to commission John Lautner to style his palatial house in Palm Springs—a concrete and glass wonder, now on the market place for the initial time at a whopping $50 Million asking value. Designed in 1973 and finished in 1980, the house—part of a desert oasis that boasts the requisite swimming pools, tennis courts and placing green—bears the dramatic curves and futuristic kind widespread to Lautner buildings, along with one jaw-dropping flourish: a circular opening in the concrete roof, which leaves the central courtyard open to the sky. That feature alone need to be worth a million or two, we consider.
