I walked into the new Vendange shop on opening day at the newly revamped Bryanston Shopping centre not too long ago. The
store provides meals, wine & olive oil accessories but also has some ceramics, glassware & décor products. It is a feast for the eyes with a distinct ‘winelands’ feel. I had a Q&A session with Richard Davies that co-owns the brand with his brother Oliver Davies.
Photographer Lauren Kim visited their 44 Stanley shop and took some lovilee pictures to share with you!
How was Vendange born?
Having first began out in the wholesale enterprise with our Trudeau boards, we learnt a lot from the buyers we supplied. Following two years of supplying retailers we decided to venture into the retail arena and launched the 1st Vendange store in the trendy 44 Stanley Ave complex. Two years later we have 6 shops with the most recent a single having opened in the Bryanston Purchasing centre. 60% of the product is our Trudeau range that we manufacture through the Benguela Trading arm of our organization, the balance getting created up of imports and neighborhood suppliers.
Q: Inform us a bit more about yourselves as the owners of the company?
Oliver and I grew up on a wine farm as part of a family that had a background in the furniture enterprise. We began
out modest – Oliver had just finished studying – and we set up making the very first cheese and baguette boards in our
parents’ driveway.
When we opened our initial retailer, to give our items greater exposure in strategic retail destinations around South
Africa, a friend recommended that we contact it ‘Vendange’ which is the French term for grape harvest. It brings with it all the excitement of the annual wine harvests in the winelands.
Q: What products do you stock?
Some of the store’s variety consists of:
- Boutique Vineyard Trudeau cheese boards produced from recycled wine barrels
- Tokara and L’Ormarins olive oil
- Imported Italian olive oil decanters
- A large variety of Champagne buckets, wine crates and decanters
- Café style bistro sets created from recycled French oak wine barrels.
Q: Where are your stores situated?
- 44 Stanley – Milpark
- Cape Quarter – Green Point
- Design Quarter – 4ways
- Loch Logan Waterfront – Bloemfontein
- Bedford Centre – Bedfordview
- Design and style Square – Brooklyn PTA
- Bryanston Buying Centre – Bryanston
Q: Tell us a bit far more about Benguela Trading, your wholesale organization
Benguela Trading launched in September 2008 in the heart of the Franschhoek valley. We manufacture cheese and baguette boards produced from recycled wine barrels as properly as other décor accessories. Our buyers contain Vendange, Poetry and Independent retailers locally. We also have a fantastic export consumer base in Europe, Asutralia and the US.
Q: Do you have any interesting details to share with us?
You may be interested to know that most of the wine barrels in South Africa are imported from France (not America) and that the life span of a barrel is approximately 3 years or 3 ‘fills’. The barrels then shed their capacity to age red wine which is exactly where we step in and recycle them into cheese and baguette boards.
Q: Can you let us in on any of your plans to expand?
We are in the procedure of developing an on-line shop as effectively as a wedding registry. We also hope to open yet another 3 retail outlets this year.
