Envisioned by interior designer and blogger Athena Calderone of Rawlins Calderone Style for herself and loved ones, the Duplex Penthouse in New York is an eclectic, enticing and quite intriguing modern dream house.
Situated in the sought-after neighborhood of DUMBO, Brooklyn, this chic dwelling is a melting pot of edginess, glamour and plain excellent taste. Interiors function mid-century, contemporary and contemporary furnishings in metal, wood, glass and wealthy textiles. The double-height windows of the living areas supply floods of natural light paired with spectacular views of the East River. The center hall, replete with a mod glass lighting pendant, offers exposed concrete walls adjacent to a transparent staircase. What a way to work a narrow space!
A definite stand-out, though, is the synthesis of styles–exotic pieces like the zebra rug and African objets d’art collected from travels are magnificently mixed with a tufted posh velvet sofa and minimalist globe chandeliers. It just functions so deliciously and leaves you wanting far more.
And let’s speak about the blue. Firstly, a preferred color of mine, this cool and soothing hue is draped throughout this dreamy duplex–on walls, artwork, designer pieces and cozy throws. Paired with the tonal greys and warm organic woods, the setting becomes most inviting and rather magical.
The kitchen is a vision of subdued opulence. The smooth cabinetry is bathed in pale grey, but trimmed in luxe gold. The two oversize pendants presiding over the white marble island also reflect this beautiful juxtaposition of colour and material, whilst the molded wood counter stools add a dose of earthy appeal to this modern culinary space.
The couple’s young son is fortunate to have such a spirited, ultra-hip room. With graffiti-esque walls, vertically-stacked skateboards on show and splashes of neon right here and there, this space is downright fabulous. The reality that his mother allowed him some creative license here is possibly the very best element.
The master suite is a dream. White bedding piled with plush pillows is set against the contemporary white and wood side tables and dresser producing a dynamic visual. It is the blue artwork above the bed, even though, that is beautiful and genuinely mesmerizes with movement the much more you look at it. The compact but neatly arranged walk-in closet is each woman’s dream with constructed-in shoe compartments, jewelry fixtures and double rows of wardrobe space.
The Duplex Penthouse is a modern day urban dream home filled with style, balance and a specific magnetism portraying timeless design.
