Haus KLR by archequipe:
“The Property KLR was constructed 1982 in Cologne as a townhouse with two units. In these days it was one of the 1st realized buildings of the architect who developed it for her husband and herself. A rentable in-law apartment with a separate staircase was supposed to assistance the young couple financially.
The district Deutz, exactly where Property KLR is located, was traditionally regarded as a secondary element of Cologne, whose centre resides on the opposite side of the river Rhine. In the final decade the as soon as neglected district Deutz evolved into a well-known address inside Cologne’s inner city.
Most components of the neighborhood have been erected in the 1930’s with 3-4 story residential buildings even though the narrow creating website of Property KLR was employed as a fruit and vegetable garden until the 1980’s. The straightforward and sensible post-war architecture, these days most typical in German cities, dominates the location today.
One challenge concerning the design was to stick to creating laws while generating adequate living space on the tiny plot. The valid creating law requested 3. meters (10 feet) distance amongst ground floor and the eastbound property line whilst the second floor needed 4.5 meters (15 feet) distance to the identical boundary. In reaction to these demands a sculptural structure originated that appears to jump back and forth playfully a number of times.
The diversely leaping cubes led to added beneficial surfaces which produced the construction of a sufficiently spacious roof terrace for the in-law apartment possible. The two remaining facades – 1 facing the street the other the garden – had been created in the style of the sculptural structure of the east façade, thereby, preserving the element of the oriel present in the surrounding buildings. Apart from the motif of the oriel the small window formats and the plastered facade as standard elements of the neighbouring housing have been incorporated into the style.
The main apartment reaches over the 3 decrease levels, the entrance to the amount of the middle level.
The kitchen and dining region are set in the lowest level, so that the garden can be utilized as an added dining location throughout the summer. The garden is also regarded as a recreational area, as for his exclusive position – below street level and shielded by the enclosing wall – it gains the character of a lonesome oasis in the midst of the city. The bedrooms of the principal apartment are situated on the initial floor and are connected with the two other floors by means of stairs within the apartment.
The in-law apartment is also structured as a maisonette, and reaches from the second floor till the attic. These days it accommodates the Cologne architecture workplace of archequipe.
In 2012, precisely 30 years after building Property KLR, in depth renovation operate was performed. All facades have been newly-plastered. Roof sheetings and window benches have been renewed, the windows painted in a corresponding colour. Inside, the stone cottage floors had been refurbished, and walls plastered smoothly. Bathrooms on all levels were fully renovated.”
